You’re not alone! I’ve had quite a few days where dinner was whatever I could throw in a pot or roasting pan while praying for strength and patience.

I’ve always enjoyed cooking but sometimes life happens. I was a homeschooling mom with health problems raising four daughters with my husband so life sometimes got busy or unpredictable.

The good news is … you don’t have to be a gourmet chef to nourish your family.

Dinner can be simple and even a little fun.

You Don’t Have To Be Perfect.

Let’s be honest: family dinners don’t need to be Instagram-worthy to be meaningful. Some of your best memories could be made around the table with foam plates and store-bought rotisserie chicken.

Your kids won’t care whether their dinner looked like it belonged in a magazine.

They’ll remember the laughter, the conversations, the prayer before eating, and the way you made the dinner table a place of warmth and connection.

Create An Easy Go To Meals List

Having a short list of your family’s favorite easy meals and keeping the ingredients on hand can save you time on the hardest days.

These are meals that are quick to prepare. You can keep a list of 5–7 quick to make recipes on your fridge, in a binder or folder or in a digital notebook.

Things like:

  • Turkey tacos made with seasoned ground turkey, shredded lettuce, tomato salsa, and cheese on hard taco shells or soft tortilla wraps.

  • Sheet pan chicken with roasted potatoes and green beans with onions.

  • Garlic bread and pasta with Italian sausage, mushrooms, spinach, and lots of marinara sauce.

  • Fish filets with sweet potato wedges or French fries.

  • Nachos with tortillas chips, slow cooker beans, shredded cheese, salsa, and olives.

Double Up!

When you cook, make double or more.

This is something we frequently do. It easy to double up on soups, casseroles, burgers, spaghetti, taco meat, or even baked chicken.

Eat some tonight, refrigerate or freeze the rest. Some foods actually taste better the next day!

This can be a real time saver.

Prep In Advance.

If your mornings or afternoons are less hectic than evenings, you can prep ahead of time.

Wash and chop veggies, thaw meat, or put ingredients in the slow cooker before lunch.

When I know I’m going to need beans I actually cook them in the slow cooker overnight. This is a real time saver.

Unwind And Enjoy.

Dinner isn’t just about food. It’s a time when you can sit and connect with your family.

The years go by and children quickly grow up so make time to enjoy dinner with your family.

You can start your meal with a prayer and then enjoy each other’s company.
